The Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) has launched Advanced Technology Pioneers (ATP), a national competition that invites university students and recent graduates to solve real-world challenges set by leading UAE organisations and develop working prototypes rather than concepts alone.

Delivered under the National Science, Technology and Innovation (NSTI) Festival, ATP is designed to give emerging technical talent the opportunity to apply their knowledge to challenges with direct relevance to the UAE. The inaugural edition features three challenge tracks, each shaped by a national organisation working at the frontier of its sector.

The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) has set a challenge on how shifts in aviation supply affect hotel guest numbers, inviting participants to build a scenario simulator that connects aviation dynamics with tourism demand.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Company (ENEC) has set a challenge on the sustainable management of seasonal jellyfish blooms at coastal facilities, inviting participants to design solutions that protect marine ecosystems while supporting operational resilience.

EDGE Group has set a challenge on seamless connectivity across Wi-Fi, 5G, satellite, and wire networks, inviting participants to design mechanisms that maintain quality of service as users move between technologies. His Excellency Shahab Issa Abu Shahab, Director General of the Advanced Technology Research Council, said: “The strength of a knowledge-based economy lies in the capabilities of its people.

Developing people with the skills and experience to help shape the future is crucial in staying relevant in the technology field. Advanced Technology Pioneers is an initiative that tries to directly align emerging talent with the Abu Dhabi’s strategic technology priorities.

By challenging emerging talent to deliver working solutions for leading national organisations, we are aiming to strengthen national capabilities, accelerate the transition from education to industry, and support in building the skilled workforce that underpins a competitive knowledge economy which in turn helps advance Abu Dhabi’s position as one of the global centers for advanced technology, innovation, and research.

” Teams of three to four members can apply via ATRC’s national platform for industry-led innovation challenges, ChallengeON.

Applications are open to university students at bachelor’s and master’s level and to graduates within two years of completing their studies. Teams can form across UAE universities or through the ChallengeON platform and will receive mentorship from subject-matter experts throughout the challenge period.

Finalists will present their prototypes at the NSTI Festival in November 2026, where one winning team will be selected in each of the three challenge tracks. Winners will receive a cash prize of AED50,000 per track, alongside internship pathways, invitations to national and international technology and innovation events, and continued visibility to prospective employers across the participating organizations.

ATP forms part of ATRC’s wider talent enablement efforts to build a sustainable pipeline of advanced technology talent for Abu Dhabi and the UAE. Across its talent enablement initiatives, ATRC has engaged more than 40,000 students to date, creating opportunities for young people to gain exposure to advanced science and technology, develop practical skills and connect with the UAE’s research and innovation ecosystem.

Through this growing pipeline, ATRC is helping equip the next generation with the capabilities needed to contribute to Abu Dhabi’s knowledge-based economy and become the advanced technology leaders of tomorrow. Applications close on 11 October 2026.
