The ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi is promising to be action-packed and exciting as top international triathletes are confirmed to participate in the event happening from 5th to 7th March.
The big sporting event to be held at Yas Marina Circuit will feature top international triathletes, world champions Katie Zaferes and Vincent Luis, plus nine-time world champion Flora Duffy and New Zealand young gun Hayden Wilde.
These triathlon superstars are just among the first batch of names that have been announced to compete this year.
They will be part of the expected 110 top triathletes and 70 elite para-triathletes from the world who will be gracing the three-day event.
The participants are all eyeing to gain points to bolster their bid to qualify to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics also happening this year.
“2019 was such a special year for me. It’s difficult to put into words the feeling of becoming the World Champion,” said Katie.
“Believe me when I say that moment was not taken for granted. It took a huge amount of hard work and determination, not just from me but also from those around me.
“Starting my WTS season with a win in Abu Dhabi fired me up to just keep getting better and better. That’s my goal again for Abu Dhabi this March – to start the season positively, especially with the Olympics right around the corner.”
She added: “I actually spent a bit of time in the UAE prior to WTS Abu Dhabi and I loved it. It’s a fantastic place to train – great weather, great facilities and a great community – so I’m really excited to come back in March.”
The full elite athlete and elite para-athlete fields will be revealed in mid-February.
Aside from the elite races, 3,000 age group and junior triathletes will also be participating in the event in various categories.
There will be 19 race categories available to give amateur athletes of all ages and abilities to take part in the sport.
