Dh800 for Distracted Driving

Abu Dhabi Police are warning motorists in the capital about what not to do behind the wheel of a moving vehicle and their repercussions which can lead to black points, fines, and accidents.

As per Article 32 of the Federal Traffic Law, using a mobile phone while driving is categorised under distracted driving, and motorists caught using a mobile device while driving will incur an AED 800 fine and four black points.

Other distractions that can land drivers in some hot water include;

• Making live social media posts
• Using a selfie stick
• Smoking or vaping while driving
• Eating or drinking
• Putting on make-up or styling hair

All five offences can land drivers with an AED800 fine and four black points.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai have also previously issued a statement warning motorists about the dangers of taking photos while driving, and announcing that if anyone is caught in doing so will incur an AED 800 fine and four black points.

“Reaction times for drivers using a phone to take pictures are around 50% slower than normal undistracted driving,” the RTA said.

According to a survey conducted last year by RoadSafteyUAE, 74% of drivers in the UAE use their mobile phones while driving.
