Design Residency: Heritage Remastered in Abu Dhabi

The Design Council Abu Dhabi (DCAD) is excited to announce the launch of its second residency cycle: the DCAD Pottery & Ceramics Design Residency Program, a groundbreaking initiative focused on heritage-driven product design and cross-cultural creative exchange. This six-month residency, developed and produced by Gushcloud International, is proudly presented in partnership with the esteemed Italian porcelain brand Ginori 1735 and will be hosted at the Abu Dhabi-based workshop MAKE. This program underscores DCAD’s unwavering commitment to fostering design innovation, celebrating cultural heritage, and empowering UAE-based creatives.

Empowering UAE Creatives

Under the esteemed chairwomanship of Her Highness Shaikha Shamsa bint Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, DCAD continues to champion design excellence within the UAE. This is achieved by providing emerging designers with immersive educational programs firmly rooted in sustainability, innovation, and the rich tapestry of Emirati cultural heritage. This initiative supports the UAE’s growing creative economy and reinforces Abu Dhabi’s position as a global hub for cross-cultural design dialogue, aligning with fostering a world-class creative ecosystem in Abu Dhabi.

A Unique Learning Experience

The new residency program will welcome 10-15 talented UAE nationals and residents, both men and women, who specialize in ceramics or pottery. Participants will receive comprehensive training in both traditional and contemporary ceramic design techniques. The curriculum blends studio practice, sustainability principles, design theory, and exclusive masterclasses, including a special session led by the Creative Director of Ginori 1735. This allows participants to develop original ceramic collections inspired by regional and Italian craft traditions, highlighting bridging centuries-old ceramic heritage with the next generation of design leadership.

Showcasing Talent on a Global Stage

The program will culminate in a public Capstone Exhibition in late 2026. Residents will have the invaluable opportunity to showcase their exceptional work to press, patrons, and collectors. Furthermore, select top talents will be awarded a prestigious internship opportunity at Ginori 1735’s Florence headquarters in late 2026, furthering offering real pathways for talent to emerge on the world stage.
