Abu Dhabi made sporting history by hosting the Cowes Week regatta in January 2023, cementing its position as the sports capital of the Middle East.
Cowes Week has been on the agenda for the British summer sports calendar since 1826, making it one of the oldest and most successful sporting events in the world. This international regatta has hosted up to 40 daily competitions for some 750 boats, making it the largest of its kind in the world.
This event offers a great combination of sailing competitions and social activities. More than 8,500 athletes take part in the event, including Olympic and world-class professionals, as well as weekend sailors. The event attracted more than 100,000 spectators and fans to watch the sail team, enjoy parties and entertainment and experience a unique atmosphere. This is a truly unique experience. This was also reported in the international media.

The initiative was officially announced last night in Abu Dhabi by Khalid Al Mutawa, Global Mission Chair and Chair of Z Zone Events LLC. He said: “We look forward to hosting this prestigious sporting event in Abu Dhabi next year and we will welcome international seafarers from all over the world to compete in Abu Dhabi. This event offers local and regional seafarers the ideal opportunity to compete with the best in the world.”
“While Cowes Week has been around for almost 200 years, it has just been organized by one organization and will be held outside the UK for the first time in 2023,” said Al Mutawa. “This event will not only showcase the UAE’s sporting attractions to the world, but also make Abu Dhabi’s tourist attractions more accessible. The weekly Carnival is expected to generate around 25,000 stays in Abu Dhabi by January 2023 and we plan to make this a permanent feature.
Lawrence Mead, Director of Cowes Week Regatta, said: “We are excited to partner with Z Zone Events LLC to bring Cowes Week Regatta to Abu Dhabi and encourage more seafarers. We will have eight races during the Abu Dhabi event along with an eclectic mix of racing and celebration, a 196 year tradition of both fun with friends and racing enthusiasts. Sign up for a week or just a few days, there’s a trophy to be won every day and a party every night.”
